The Paper Moon

Written and Directed by String & Shadow Puppet Theater

Recommend for ages 5 and up

“Things got very strange when the moon fell out of the sky… Of course, authorities replaced it right away, glued a flat paper circle up there where the old moon used to be. But still, people noticed when lovers did not swoon, wolves did not howl, the tides no longer pushed in and out – why the paper moon did not even wax and wane! All the artists were at a loss to come up with any good ideas without moonlit nights to guide them… There are no new songs… No poems or stories or paintings! While the people on Earth experience confusion, nefarious authorities recognize an advantage to the Paper Moon: without the real moon, there are less pesky eccentrics, oddballs, non-conformists…! A prestigious official is determined to prevent the return of the real moon at whatever cost.”

All performances are pay what you can from $5 to $35. A portion of the tickets are set aside for day of walk ups at no cost. Box office opens 1 hour prior to performance time

Olympia Family Theater is launching our first Company-in-Residence program with String and Shadow: a giant puppet theater company creating heartfelt shows for all ages. Their style of puppetry includes masks, giant puppets, elaborate costumes, transforming sets and shadow puppets. Launched in 2016, String and Shadow has quickly become a beloved part of Olympia’s art scene.

OFT is kicking things off in March by presenting a revival of their 2020 production,The Paper Moon, which was cancelled mid-production due to the pandemic. In our 2022-2023 season you’ll see String and Shadow puppets throughout OFT’s Mainstage season, puppetry classes for youth, and a special co-production which we will announce next spring.

So begins The Paper Moon!
