Program for – Barney Carey Gets His Wings

WELCOME:

When I was offered the opportunity to direct this show, it felt like an insurmountable dream had come true for that Anya, fresh out of music school, newly teaching at this cool theater company. I often found myself comparing the roles of this job to that of a ship’s captain. Both require setting a clear course towards a common goal while navigating challenges along the way. Just as a captain relies on their crew, a director depends on their team to bring their vision to life through collaboration, problem-solving, and attention to detail. And how deeply grateful am I for my talented & dedicated production team! Their collective creativity, tireless work ethic, and unwavering support have been instrumental in bringing this production to life. Together, they have infused the stage with magic and wonder, creating an unforgettable experience for audiences of all ages.

I’ll be the first to admit that I had not heard of this story before the offer to direct it arose, but when I first finished reading the script, I was amazed at how much can be unpacked from such a short story. Barney Carey Gets His Wings is the tale of a young boy who unintentionally sets out to break generational cycles and turn society’s expectations of boyhood on its head. Though this story touches on themes relevant to queer communities, this story is for everyone. This story is for those who have ever felt lost in the social fabric, those who have ever felt like they didn’t belong or feel accepted by those near and dear to them. The winning element of this story is its heart and ability to reach audiences across generations. I invite you to open yourself to the magical world of Barney Carey and find your wings within!

CAST BIOS:

Hudson Ray

(he/him)

Barney Carey*

While this is Hudson’s first time in an Olympia Family Theater main stage play…he is no stranger to the stage. He has previously been in productions of Peter Pan, The Music Man, The Little Mermaid, and more! Musicals are his absolute favorite. The thing he has enjoyed most about being in this show has been making amazing friends and also getting to teach the important lesson that it’s always ok to be who you really want to be. When not onstage, Hudson loves to sing in the Olympia Youth Chorus, play the clarinet, and spend time with his family.

* Hudson Ray is playing Barney on Friday nights and Saturday matinees

Kemi Holley

(she/her)

Barney Carey*

Kemi is beyond excited to be in her first main stage show with Olympia Family Theater! She has previously been involved in theater camps, and is so happy to be stretching her wings into a big production. Her favorite part of being in this play has been getting to connect with the audience and giggling with her cast mates during rehearsals. When not onstage, Kemi loves to play the piano, have fun in the show, and create art.

Mark Alford

(he/they)

Michael Carey

Mark is thrilled to be part of this wonderful team! He has worked as an actor/director/producer in the local theater scene for more than 14 years, and was hired this past September as the Executive Director here at Olympia Family Theater. Past roles at OFT include Prince Randolph in Cinder Edna, Tim in The Imaginators, Kyle in Fishnapped, and The Bunny in Goodnight Moon. Favorite roles in the community include Johnny in American Idiot (Lakewood Playhouse), Lucas in Laughter on the 23rd Floor, Antonio in Rock’n’Roll 12th Night, and Andrew in Recent Tragic Events (Harlequin Productions.) Mark is grateful and overjoyed for the opportunity to help tell this sweet and poignant story. To anyone feeling lost in the crowd, please know that there are communities waiting to embrace you for who you are as soon as you find them!

Aya

(he/she/they)

Agnes

Aya is so excited to combine their love of theater with their love of Drag for this extra special production. You may have previously seen Aya in Rebel Without a Cause at the Evergreen Playhouse or performing gorgeous Drag numbers with Morningwood Manor, Lucy ElleBalls productions, or Capitol City Drag. Their favorite part of being in this show has been working with such amazing people. When not onstage you can find Aya in the audience of other local shows or eating tasty gluten free treats. Check out her Instagram! Tip your local drag artists!! Cashapp – $ayaolydrag Venmo – @ayaolydrag

CREWS BIOS:

Anya Guadamuz

(they/them)

Director

Anya has been a part of OFT for a little over two years now. This show marks Anya’s theatrical directing debut! Anya is incredibly grateful for the opportunity to work alongside such talented artists, designers, and actors. Anya has been involved with OFT as a Teaching Artist, Stage Manager, Vocal Director, and most recently, the Assistant Director for The Lightning Thief. Outside of OFT, Anya enjoys spending their time singing with Capital City Chorus, offering astrological consults through their business: Sapphic Saturnus Astrology, and chilling with their best homies!

Alayna Chamberland

(she/her)

Stage Manager, Costumes, Props

Alayna has been involved in theater since 2007 and has been seen sparkling on stages all over the Pacific Northwest. When she’s not performing onstage or managing shows from the wings, Alayna loves to read, craft, and care-take for her literal zoo; two cats (Arpeggio and Olive), three lizards (Marla, Petal, and Poppy), a tortoise (TT), and a turtle (Toot).

Jordanna Averett

(she/her)

Set Designer & Scenic Artist

Jordanna is an Olympia based artist and theater creative. She loves working practically any role behind-the scenes. Recent favorites include helping to build the giant puppet show: Ship of Fools with String and Shadow over the summer, and getting to work the fly rail for Hurricane Diane this fall at SPSCC. Jordanna is grateful to be part of such a sweet and important show as Barney Carey. Remember to be kind out there! All my love to Danny.

Vanessa Postil

(she/her)

Lighting Designer, Costumes, Props

Vanessa is an Olympia based performing artist, dancer, choreographer, producer, musician, actor, Teaching Artist, mama, and lover of cats. Vanessa has been working in theater and performance for over 20 years, and is very grateful to be part of this production here at OFT.

Gloria Bacon

(she/her)

Sound Designer

A Tacoma-based songwriter, musician, stagehand, and audio nerd, Gloria is returning to Olympia Family Theater as the sound designer for Barney Carey Gets His Wings. Prior to this production, Gloria was the soundboard operator for The Lightning Thief, and the assistant stage manager for The Velveteen Rabbit. As per usual, Gloria has enjoyed collaborating with the lovely folks at OFT, and is happy to have been a part of the wholesomeness that is Barney Carey.

David Nowitz

(he/him)

Scenic Artist & Engineer

David is happiest tinkering around in his scene shop coming up with imaginative ways to make things. Some favorite engineering challenges for Olympia Family Theater include:

  • The dunking donut for Flora & Ulysses
  • Building an escalator for Corduroy
  • Making a recycling machine with working wooden gears for Cinder Edna
  • Making an under bed and over bed/jungle gym in The Monster Under the Bed
  • Making a bed fall through a ceiling in Mercy Watson to the Rescue
  • The TV falling in Dragons Love Tacos
  • Kabuki style curtain drops for Nyx and The Long Night
  • The truck in The Girl Who Swallowed A Cactus

Kaiah Costa

(she/her)

Agnes' Makeup Artist

Kaiah is excited to be part of the team responsible for making Barney Carey soar! Kaiah can be seen around OFT serving on the board, volunteering at shows, and occasionally on stage. Previous OFT roles include Mirror Toad in The Wind in the Willows and numerous Daytime Show appearances. Outside of OFT Kaiah works as an archaeologist. She would like to thank Anya and the rest of the cast and crew for the opportunity to work on such a magical performance!
