Program for Alice in Wonderland

ARTISTIC DIRECTOR'S NOTE:

Thank you so much for joining OFT as we reopen our doors for our first full season since 2020. Although I’ve only been at OFT for one short year, I have come to know this place as a community full of love, creativity, courage, and integrity. It is an honor to be part of this story.

In our 2022-2023 season, every play we produce is intended to bring us together around ideas and themes that spark conversation, build empathy, and help us to heal from the last two years: in The Secret Garden we are directly talking about healing, grief and community. In the shows coming up we’ll have dance parties, hero’s journeys, and critical analysis of equity in America.

You’ll also notice that every play centers young people in leading roles. The last two years have been difficult for people of all ages, but have had a profound impact on our youth. We need to uplift, center, and celebrate their resilience and talent – especially as we rebuild our communities.

In closing, I’ll ask you these questions: What is the world you want to see in the future? What does it look like? What does it feel like? How do people treat one another? I believe that theater can play a critical role in helping us to visualize that world, and to share our ideas for transformation with one another. I hope the plays we’re sharing with you this season embody some of your hopes and dreams – and I can’t wait to sit next to you in the theater to share these stories.

BIG, big love,
Lily

CAST BIOS:

Alice - Jada Miller

Jada is a lifelong member of the Thurston County community and a junior in high school. Jada has been growing their love for live performances since their first acting camp at age 6! Their previous OFT productions include 3 Impossible Questions and Corduroy. They are also a member of the OFT Teen Council. Their other passions include self-expression through various mediums, such as drawing, writing and learning to play the bass. Jada is excited to be back on the OFT stage and in their first musical production.

Queen of Hearts - Lucy Elle Balls

Lucy Elle Balls has been performing on stage for over 15 years! In her experience she has played multiple roles including Tulsa in Gypsy! A Musical Fable, Cogsworth in Disney’s Beauty and the Beast, Leonato in Much Ado About Nothing and Medlock in OFT’s adaptation of The Secret Garden! Lucy has also been a part of many improv performances including murder mysteries and touring dinner theater troupes. Lucy began her career as a Drag Queen about 7 years ago in Long Beach, CA. Lucy now produces her own shows and works on the board for Capital City Pride. Lucy has been very excited to be a part of the Olympia Arts Community and can’t wait to share more events with you. You can find her on Facebook and also on instagram (@lucyelleballs) spreading joy, one performance at a time.

King of Hearts & Ensemble - Audrey Spinazola

Like most of us, Audrey Spinazola is super cool and can do lots of things. After graduating from The Clown Conservatory in 2008 and a second physical theater conservatory program in 2009, she has been creating, performing, and coaching circus and theater non-stop. She was Youth Performance Program Manager for SANCA in Seattle, a hospital clown for the Medical Clown Project, and has juggled for MythBusters and the SF Opera. She currently teaches youth circus classes at Sparrow Studios in Olympia! In her spare time she enjoys being upside down, paddling around in her canoe, and playing music.

March Hare & Ensemble - Teal Farías

Mexican queer dancer and community organizer that lives for pleasure activism and building community through dance.
Moved to Olympia almost 5 years ago from Mérida, Yucatán, México, searching for a big chance and when I arrived, realized there was not much dancing and decided to pursue music as DJ Siempre Bruja and play intercultural Latinx beats in the PNW.
Uses dance and performance arts  as a canvas for social justice work.
Teal believes that a community that dances together, stays together.

Mad Hatter, Sibling & Ensemble - Lex Langguth-Torres

Lex is ecstatic to take the stage once again at Olympia Family Theatre with an all-star cast! Lex appeared in past plays at OFT called “Lucha Virus” and  a modern adaption of “The Secret Garden”, as well as participated in OFTs most recent “Tales Told in Ten”. When Lex isn’t acting, dancing, or singing they work to facilitate support groups for LGBTQ+ youth and Allie’s. But one day they hope to become a full-time silly goose.
For Lex, it has been an honor and hubbery-jubbery joy to bring this adaption of Alice and Wonderland to life with such a magical and outstanding team!

Dodo, Tiger Lily, & Ensemble - Haleigh Bloomfield

Haleigh is thrilled to be part of Alice in Wonderland: A New Musical. Over 20 years ago she auditioned for an elementary school musical production of Treasure Island and has loved performing ever since. She has been focusing on raising her two daughters, Nora and Lucy, the last 9 years. She would like to thank her family for their support in her returning to the stage!

Caterpillar, Auk, & Ensemble - Tom Sanders

Tom is happy to be back in an OFT show for the first time since 3 Impossible Questions five years ago. It has been a joy to work with all of these fantastic, creative people. Please enjoy our creation. Previous OFT shows include; Winnie the Pooh, Starry Messenger, Charlotte’s Web, The Somewhat True Story of Robin Hood, Animal Farm and Korchak’s Children.

Dormouse, Rose, & Ensemble - Christine Yorba

Christine is a community activist, artist, author, outdoor enthusiast, rockhound, drag king, Spanish teacher, and a self-titled “scholarly homie.” This is her second production with Olympia Family Theater! Christine took up acting as a way to represent the Latinx community during the Fall ‘22 production of The Secret Garden here at OFT. Christine is a California transplant who ventured to Olympia to pursue a Master’s in Teaching degree at The Evergreen State College. Through her charismatic teaching, Christine creates opportunities for students to build comunidad and conexión through the power of speaking Spanish. Christine believes that if you aren’t represented, represent! She represents by modeling authenticity in all facets of her life and believes that everyone has the potential to create opportunities to be represented in places they want to exist.

Knave of Hearts & Ensemble - Dio Lewis

Dio is making his way back on the stage after a long hiatus (cough cough COVID cough cough). He’s been going to OFT since early childhood, and is so excited to be back in a mainstage production! His natural habitat is his car and in his free time he enjoys sloppy dancing and playing guitar.

White Rabbit - Elsa Enquist-Hinz

Elsa Enquist-Hinz entered this world 14 years ago as a tiny little fighter. From that day forward, she has forged her own path into the world of acting with determination and spirit. Elsa has always felt at home on the stage. Even at 5 yrs. old she got the loudest applause for her over-the-top performance as ‘brown bear.’ Elsa has performed in many musicals and Nutcracker productions. She has also enjoyed acting classes offered through OFT and earned the title of ‘Best Improv.’ Ahsoka Tano from Star Wars inspires Elsa. Much like Ahsoka Tano, they are both headstrong students. Elsa knows she can accomplish anything that she puts her mind to, and if she wants to be famous, then she shall be!

White Rabbit - Mia Asher

Mia is currently a highschool freshman with a passion for all things acting, singing and performing. During her two year stay in Austria, Europe, she fell in love with theater and has been acting ever since. She has enjoyed taking classes at OFT since 2019, and also participated in several other summer programs including Beauty and the Beast, Frozen, Alice in Cyberland, and The Brothers Grimm Spectaculathon. If Mia is not acting she spends her time drawing, writing stories and playing piano.

White Rabbit - Izumi Huff

Izumi is a student at Washington Middle School. She’s been acting since she was 4. Some of her favorite roles include Kirstie Johansen in Number the Stars, the crow in Nyx and the Long Night, and PB in One Slight Hitch. She’s excited to be back on the stage of OFT and hopes you enjoy the show.

CREWS BIOS:

Lavinia Roberts - Writer

Lavinia Roberts is an award-winning  playwright and educator.  She is published with Applause Books, Big Dog Plays, Brooklyn Publishers, Eldridge Publishing, Heuer Publishing, Plays: The Drama Magazine for Young People, Pioneer Drama, Redleaf Press, Smith and Kraus, and others. She has received productions in all 50 states and internationally in Australia, Bermuda, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand, Singapore, South Africa, South Korea, Taiwan, Turkey, and The United Kingdom. She has a MA in Theatre from New York University and MFA in Playwriting from Southern Illinois University.  She is currently an Assistant Professor & Murphy Fellow in Theatre at Hendrix College in Conway, Arkansas.

Ahmed Al Abaca - Composer & Music Director

Ahmed Al Abaca (they/them) is an African American composer, conductor, songwriter, pianist, and community facilitator. Creating power and possibility, through music, for themselves and the diverse communities they are a part of is the base of Ahmed’s work.
Raised in San Bernardino, CA, Ahmed understands the value of hard work and perseverance in the face of systemic and interpersonal challenges. Ahmed’s vision is “a new renaissance” for underrepresented composers, which centers the works of people of color, and creates opportunities to perform, record, and archive their work.
Ahmed received their B.A. in Music from Hunter College in New York and attended advanced classes in film scoring at Juilliard and UCLA Extension. While in New York, Ahmed began their professional career as a composer, scoring over 3 plays and 2 musicals. Here is where Ahmed met their creative partner and dear friend Lily Raabe – Lily has directed every show Ahmed has scored.

Lily is the perfect collaborator because she shares the same views of how art can be the conduit of change in overlooked communities. Ahmed, Lily, and Brandon Estrella created and produced an Art Festival in Hilo, Hawaii. The Live Aloha Art Festival (named by Waiakea high school students) combined Theatre, Music, and Film. As a collective, they worked together with local organizations and schools to provide a festival for the people by the people.
Over the years, Ahmed has advocated for compassionate, honest, and genuine community engagement. Currently serving as music director of South Loop Symphony, a community orchestra in Chicago, Ahmed’s passion for honest community engagement and the importance of true transparency, has connected them with Chicago’s increasingly diverse artistic community. By programming music from the 20th and 21st centuries with an emphasis on Black and Women composers, Ahmed has exposed audiences to music that has been largely forgotten or overlooked. Since moving to Chicago, Ahmed has also worked with some of the nation’s best musicians-from D-Composed, a premiere All-Black string quartet to the Chicago Sinfonietta Orchestra, as a co-presenter demonstrating the roles and responsibilities of a conductor to students in the Chicago area.
Over the past 20 years, Ahmed has had the pleasure of working with all kinds of communities from being a peer educator for 4 years while in high school to now, working with young Black and Latiné music students on the south and west sides of Chicago. Composing and arranging music for professional and community orchestras all over the US, and providing affordable music lessons to those who are passionate about learning more about music. They will continue to promote the importance of genuine, compassionate, and honest community engagement through conversation, action, and music.

Emily McHugh - Puppetry

Emily McHugh is a puppet-maker, paper-cutter, and performer who grew up in Olympia. He has used his passion for programming and hobby electronics to build fully automated puppet worlds out of 3D printed gears, microcontrollers, motors and corn starch. Since co-founding String & Shadow Puppet Theater, he has developed and managed their mobile theater infrastructure – setting up and breaking down an entire small theater’s worth of sound and light equipment every performance in order to deliver an entirely unique theater experience directly to the people. He can often be found on the streets of Olympia disguised as an animal playing folk music

Natalie “Wild Tiny” Coblentz - Art Director (Set, Lights, Environment)

Natalie Coblentz  [They/Them/Theirs] is a local queer Latinx artist who seemingly has their fingers in all the pies. Their friends call them Wild Tiny for all the big artsy ideas they have. Natalie graduated from Seattle University with a BA in Fine Arts and has been hoping around from production to production since. Natalie has a passion for immersive spaces and light art along with sound scaping. If there is a new technology, they’ll learn it, but that doesn’t keep them from continuing with classic studio art. Natalie believes art is healing and should be practiced by all.

Rebecca Rogers - Costume Design Team

Rebecca Rogers’ lifelong love of theater has given her many opportunities onstage and behind the scenes, all of which led up to her currently trying to swallow a cactus here at Olympia Family Theater, where she has been a familiar face for nearly eight years! In addition to directing and teaching, she leads OFT’s first improvisational troupe, The Real Faker’s Dozen. She would like to let the cast and crew know, “That’s Gravity!” Rebecca would also like to thank Maren, Taz, Ivan, and Sypha for their love, patience, and support. And she hopes very much they remember what she looks like.

Jonnita Thompson - Costume Design Team

Jonnita Thompson was inspired to learn to sew to make Halloween costumes, it came in handy when her daughter began performing in school plays! Jonnita has assisted with costumes for OFT shows Alice in Wonderland, Fishnapped!, The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane, and Cinder Edna. Corduroy was her first show as lead designer.

Ayana Eagans - Sound Design Team

Teal Farías - Sound Design Team

Mexican queer dancer and community organizer that lives for pleasure activism and building community through dance.
Moved to Olympia almost 5 years ago from Mérida, Yucatán, México, searching for a big chance and when I arrived, realized there was not much dancing and decided to pursue music as DJ Siempre Bruja and play intercultural Latinx beats in the PNW.
Uses dance and performance arts  as a canvas for social justice work.
Teal believes that a community that dances together, stays together.

Samantha Chandler - Properties Design Team

Samantha is co-founder of OFT and currently serving as board chairperson. She has done all the things on and off stage, over OFT’s 17 years. She has many roles in the world of Wonderland: the Queen of Hearts, Caterpillar, Tweedle Dee, a flower, the dodo, and the Duchess, but this is her first time making and procuring props for Alice. She is happy to have made a small contribution to this fun new version of Wonderland. Enjoy!

Irina Gendelmen - Properties Design Team

Irina Gendelman currently teaches communication at Saint Martin’s University. Since moving to Olympia in 1992, she started an Olympia mural collective Creative Revolution on Walls (CRoW), collaborated on several interactive multi-venue performances known as the SAD Cafe, built a spaceship for SAD Cafe’s Trip to Space, created props for the Transfused Rock Opera, and organized street theater and secret cafes with her students at Saint Martin’s University.

David Nowitz - Scenic Engineer & Builder

David is happiest tinkering around in his scene shop coming up with imaginative ways to make things. Some favorite engineering challenges for Olympia Family Theater include

  • The dunking donut for Flora & Ulysses
  • Building an escalator for Corduroy
  • Making a recycling machine with working wooden gears for Cinder Edna
  • Making an under bed and over bed/jungle gym in The Monster Under the Bed
  • Making a bed fall through a ceiling in Mercy Watson to the Rescue
  • The TV falling in Dragons Love Tacos
  • Kabuki style curtain drops for Nyx and The Long Night
  • and
  • The truck in The Girl Who Swallowed A Cactus

Ben Pagel - Scenic Builder

Ben started LARPing on Alice as a Carpenter and Electrician while their partner, Christine Yorba, was rehearsing. All it took was a mechanic’s jumpsuit, goofy smile, and some tunes. Ben is an Oly native and explores ways they can sustainably engage with the diverse communities Olympia has to offer. This summer you may see Ben at a few of their favorite spots; Skateland, the Deschutes, Burfoot, Gross Out, & Westside Lanes. If you find Ben in the wild, leave him there.
